Case studies

Heritage Surveys is engaged on an ongoing basis to provide an annual inspection of the external facades to the Ministry of Defence (MOD) Main Building.

The MOD’s main building stands of the site of the former Royal Palace of Whitehall, the principal royal residence from 1529 to 1698 when all except the Banqueting House, Holbein Gate and the Wine Cellar was destroyed by fire. As such, it holds a key place in the architectural, political and social history of England.

The Palace was Henry VIII’s principal London’s residence and the wine cellar (built by Cardinal Wolsey in 1515) is important survival, having been excavated and lowered to its current position in the basement prior to construction of the MOD.
