Case studies

Lovekyn Chapel is the only remaining free-standing chantry chapel in England and, dating back to 1309, is the oldest complete building in Kingston. The Chapel was given to Kingston Grammar School in 1561 by Queen Elizabeth I.

We were appointed by Kingston Grammar School to carry out the sensitive repair and conservation of the external facades of the chapel, which included the repair of 'Reigate Stone'. It is widely acknowledged in building conservation that Reigate is a 'problem stone' which is unusually challenging in terms of deterioration and repair.

Conservation trials to the Reigate stone were undertaken in 2015 and a full external repairs programme undertaken in 2016-17.
